A team of engineers from Cornell University has developed a novel framework that can make elastomer design a modular process, which supports the combination of different metals with a polymer. The framework was created when researchers from the Biofoundry Lab at Cornell attempted to make an elastic vascular graft to aid repair heart tissue with copper, as the metal can help induce angiogenesis, the process of blood vessels growing from the existing vessels. The team also undertook biocompatibility and mechanical experiments on the elastomers to test the material’s strain and compatibility with living tissue, and the results indicated that the biocompatibility and durability of the elastomer closely imitated the traditional biomaterials used for medical purposes. The leading companies in the biomaterials market are Cam Bioceramics B.V., CoorsTek Inc., BASF SE, Berkeley Advanced Biomaterials, Corbion, Carpenter Technology Corporation, Evonik Industries, Royal DSM, Celanese Corporation, CeramTec, and GELITA AG. Companies are also collaborating with academia to advance research in the field of biomaterials. BioCanna CuraLab, a wholly-owned subsidiary of BioCanna Health Care Inc., recently announced a breakthrough development in its work with the University of Ottawa with the use of innovative nanotechnologies in its “BioNano Virus Detection System.” The system can rapidly detect the presence of virus with superior reliability, sensitivity, and convenience and is also cost-efficient. nScrypt recently announced that it was successful in bioprinting PetVivo® Holdings’ biomaterial with its Bio-Fabrication Tool (BAT). The company used its BAT tech to 3D bioprint PetVivo’s aqueous hydrogel biomaterial into symmetrical structures. The biomaterial includes elastin, collagen, and heparin and can be used to fabricate injected particles, coatings, regenerative as well as biologically integrative medical devices, and drug delivery carriers. It can also be combined with other biomaterials, which allows its use in making various types of implants. The biomaterial tech is suitable as an alternative for the existing slower healing permanent implants, specifically for orthopedic applications. With the increasing geriatric population and rising incidences of orthopedic ailments and cardiovascular diseases, these biomaterials would find significant use in medical treatments. The broadening application scope, driven by the increasing use of biomaterials to improve the functions of bones, muscles, and damaged tissues, is boosting the adoption of biomaterials in different medical procedures. The technological advancements in other fields, such as tissue engineering, medical implants, drug delivery devices, and cosmetic surgeries, are also propelling the growth of the biomaterials market.
